What Are Porcelain Veneers?

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a type of cosmetic dental procedure designed to improve the appearance of the smile. Each veneer is applied to the front-facing surface of the affected tooth to enhance its strength and form. The tooth is usually prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel, so this treatment is considered to be permanent. Porcelain veneers typically last a long time; however, should an issue occur, a veneer can be replaced by a skilled dentist with training in veneer placement. Veneers can be placed on one, several, or all of the visible teeth, depending on the patient’s needs and goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

Lots of people choose porcelain veneers to enhance their smile, but this procedure is not right for everyone. If you have one or more cosmetic concerns that can be addressed with this technique and want a permanent solution, porcelain veneers may be right for you. Dr. Narang or another of our experienced dentists will evaluate your oral concerns and provide guidance as to which method can offer the optimal outcome. As part of the porcelain veneers process, you will have a mock-up created of the final result before any treatment begins, so you can make adjustments as needed to attain the look you desire.

Porcelain Veneers Vs. Dental Crowns

Some patients may be able to choose between a dental crown and a porcelain veneer. That said, porcelain veneers are typically used for cosmetic treatment and crowns for restorative procedures, although there are instances where the reverse can make sense. Porcelain veneers only require modifying the front surface of the tooth, while crowns are a more aggressive treatment. If the tooth is not too badly damaged and the main concern is aesthetics, a porcelain veneer may be suitable. In the event the tooth is weakened, damaged, or decayed, a crown will likely be the best course of action. Dental crowns are most commonly used to restore a tooth with decay too extensive for a filling, to preserve the tooth after a root canal, or to finish a dental implant after placement.

What Happens During the Porcelain Veneers Process?

Your comfort during this process is of the utmost importance to us, and we will customize the procedure to suit your unique needs and goals. When you arrive for your initial consultation, Dr. Narang or one of our other skilled dental professionals will discuss the steps involved, answer questions, and address any concerns you may have.

Additionally, he will offer you a chance to view before-and-after photos from our smile gallery to develop a better idea of what to expect from the results. This will also provide you with an opportunity to inform him of your tastes and indicate which outcome appeals most to you. From here, Dr. Narang will take digital photos of your teeth and discuss how the treatment can enhance the aesthetics of your smile.

Advancements in porcelain veneers have refined the procedure extensively, allowing us to gently reshape your original teeth with minimal filing necessary. We can then affix the veneers to match the shape, color, and translucency of your existing teeth to provide the most natural-looking and proportional outcome possible. Dr. Narang will do a mock-up or trial smile before he starts by taking moulds of the teeth, he will also take photographs. Dr. Narang will use the moulds to “wax-up” the teeth to mimic the new smile on the mould. This “wax-up” mould will be shown to the patient before he even touches the teeth. This allows the patient to see how their smile would look like prior to preparing their teeth. Once approved, the mock-up will be utilized to engineer temporary veneers, which again will be tailored to your exacting specifications before the final result is completed. After making the final adjustments, the permanent veneers will be fabricated and attached. Because of the multi-step, advanced technique involved and the long-lasting effects, porcelain veneers typically are not reversible. Due to the durability, beauty, and exceptional customization possible with this method, many patients are delighted with the benefits and report a renewed sense of self-assurance.

Porcelain Veneers FAQ

We want you to have as much information as you need to make an informed decision about your oral health care. We have provided answers to some commonly asked questions below. If you would like to learn more, we welcome you to contact our office and schedule a consultation.
Minor dental issues can often be disguised, corrected, or improved with porcelain veneers, including minor chips and cracks, gaps, and crowding. Porcelain veneers can strengthen the tooth structure in certain cases; however, if the tooth is significantly damaged, we may recommend a dental crown or another treatment to address your concern. You should have good overall oral health before starting the procedure, and if you have gingivitis, cavities, or other issues, we can help you address those before beginning.
Absolutely. One of the many benefits of porcelain veneers from our practice is the natural-looking outcome. Porcelain offers the same translucent shine as natural teeth, and we will match the colour either to your existing teeth, or select a shade that suits your cosmetic goals. Other than noticing the improvement in your smile, your friends and family should not be able to tell that your porcelain veneers are anything but natural.
Porcelain veneers are considered a cosmetic treatment and are therefore not covered by most dental insurance plans. We believe everyone deserves the smile of their dreams, and we can work with you to find a payment option that fits into your budget. For more dental financing information, please talk to our team.
Porcelain veneers resist staining due to their non-porous nature. Unfortunately, that also means that they cannot be whitened. It is not anticipated that you should need to whiten your porcelain veneers, as they are far less likely than natural teeth to become discoloured. A routine dental cleaning can help brighten your veneers, but for dramatic changes in shade, you will have to replace the veneer.
