How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Professional teeth whitening has helped countless individuals reverse years of tooth staining for a lighter, more youthful smile. It’s no surprise that customized teeth whitening from a dentist can achieve more effective and immediate results than over-the-counter teeth bleaching options, but many patients don’t know exactly why professional teeth whitening is able to produce such a powerful change.
Toothpastes, rinses, and whitestrips often don’t produce a noticeable improvement in tooth shade because they lack the necessary chemical compounds to break down the colored molecules that lead to discoloration. Unlike these over-the-counter products, the bleaching agents in our whitening system are able to pass freely through the enamel and dentin of a tooth. With the Zoom® whitening system at our practice, hydrogen peroxide and light-activation work together to penetrate all areas of the tooth and break down discoloration. Patients can simply relax in their chair while our dental hygienist applies the whitening solution in three 15-minute sessions. The molecules in the whitening gel spread in all directions once applied, allowing the entire tooth to be whitened even though the gel may only cover a portion of the enamel. During this process, the different parts of the tooth, such as the dentin, enamel, fillings, or bonding materials, are left unharmed. This allows patients to whiten dark or yellowed teeth without risking damage to the tissues in or around the mouth.
Our Mississauga dentists offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening options to help you undo discoloration and brighten your smile. Please contact Dr. Arun Narang & Associates to learn more about how we can help you achieve your goals.
