A muted lilac-blue reception area with hand-painted floral accents and the bantering camaraderie of staff is at once welcoming and relaxing. A play room knee-deep full of balls beckons young visitors. Long gone are the days of dreary waiting rooms; the piercing sound of a drill wailing from the back halls. In fact, at this multi-disciplinary dental office, sophisticated technology is replacing the dreaded drill.

For people who find the drill unsettling, a compact piece of equipment called the KCP Whisperjet is a revolutionary alternative for simple fillings in adults and children. "Fine particles of sand under compressed air gently cut the tooth," explains Dr. Narang. "There's no vibration and no friction." This noise-free, pain-free, drill-free cavity preparation system brings new hope to dental phobics. Across all of North America, fewer than 30 units are in use. Fortunately, one of them happens to be in Dr. Narang's Mississauga office.

Dr. Arun Narang, a dental surgeon, along with Dr. Nasser Derakshan, a certified periodontist; Dr. Oleh Korol, a certified oral surgeon; and doctors Indrani Telang and Edward Venerus, both dental surgeons, share a flourishing practise because of the things they do with a difference. In many instances, that difference involves using some of the most leading-edge technologies and smile-design procedures available in dentistry today.

In addition to offering drill-lees dentistry, Dr. Narang's practice offers electronic dental anaesthesia. For many people a trip to the dentist conjures up images of discomfort. "For the patient who need a simple procedure, we can apply two adhesive pads to the face. These points are stimulated by a signal from a nine-volt battery contained in a small, hand-held unit controlled by the patient," says Dr. Narang.

Conversely, for those who would rather not be involved in any procedures, patients can distract themselves by donning a pair of Virtual I Glasses. This high-tech piece of headgear with a 3D screen and built-in sound lets patients play video games, view a dental education presentation or watch a movie.

"We also have something called CASEY, the latest interactive patient education system covering any topic you can imagine in dentistry," says Dr. Narang. His practise is also one of the few in the city with chair-side video imaging in every room "which allows us to show you difficult-to-see areas of your mouth."

From the most high-tech cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers, aesthetic crown and bridge work and porcelain fillings at the back of the mouth to implants, teeth bleaching, and chlorzoin application, Dr. Narang & Associates provide a broad range of preventative, restorative and cosmetic treatments for patients of all ages.

"All handpieces and dental instruments are steam sterilized in our state-of-the-art sterilization centre. We are very proud of it and will be happy to show it to you on your introductory tour of our office," Dr. Narang suggests.

With so many different needs and so little time for patients to schedule dental visits into their full schedules, "we embrace a team philosophy of treatment," says Dr. Narang. "The hygienists are effective at cleaning teeth and prophylaxis; the oral surgeon, skillful at extracting wisdom teeth; the periodontist in treating gums and implant surgery. I know I have strong skills in cosmetic dentistry and my associates are skillful at root canal therapy and treating children. Together we combine to give a high level of service and expertise."
